Frank Southecorvo grew up in , where he studied with saxophonists Dave Faucher and Jerry Bergonzi. During three of his years in high school he won competitions to play in All-State jazz ensembles led by Berkeley College of Music faculty members Herb Pomeroy, John LaPorta and others. is a city with a real jazz heritage. While growing up Frank was inspired by the many jazz icons he got to hear in clubs and concerts – musicians like Phil Woods, Sonny Rollins, Pat Metheny, Bob Moses, Gary Burton, The Fringe, Jerry Bergonzi, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Betty Carter, Abdullah Ibrahim, Max Roach, Jon Hendricks, Dexter Gordon and countless others.
In 1987 he moved to where fans have become familiar with Frank’s saxophone playing with his own jazz bands, as well as with the horn sections of various rhythm + blues and jazz big bands. Frank has played many concerts and festivals throughout the area, including the Jazz Composers Forum, WNC Jazz Society, Bele Chere, the Wilmington Jazz & Blues Festival, Greenville (SC) Music On Main, Spartanburg (SC) Jazz at and the Asheville Original Music series.
Frank has performed with (in no particular order) legends Bobby Shew, Byron Stripling, Rick Simmerlee, Deborah Coleman, Bill Gerhardt, Mike Holstein, Asheville Jazz Orchestra, Michael Jefry Stevens, Chuck Lichtenberger, Richard Shulman, D-Jazz band, Orange Krush, Ras Alan and the Lions, Blind Lemon Philips, Maharajah Reggae Allstars, Voice of the Turtle, The Magdaddys, Spartanburg Philharmonic, Hendersonville Symphony, Asheville Symphony, Done For The Evening trio, Blind Lemon Phillips and others.
Because of his interest in writing and playing original music, Frank has made three Cd’s under his own label: “ANTHEM”(2000) and “Chroma”(2005), with a five piece band and also a duo CD, “”(2005), with pianist Mark Freundt. Frank recorded a tape with the band Voice of the Turtle (1993), which he co-led with guitarist Alan Childres.
Currently, he plays alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, splitting his time between his own projects playing original music and big bands, blues bands and dance groups.
